In an interview with The Guardian, Drew chronicled her tragic previous. As she explained, her father, actor John Drew Barrymore, was a “violent alcoholic” and her mom, Jaid, had little working out of "parental responsibility."

The institution advised that Drew legally separate from her mom. Drew did simply and was declared an adult at 14.

From there, she worked low-wage jobs till she may take a look at her hand at acting again. At age 17, she landed a role in Poison Ivy, then went on to star in motion pictures like Batman Forever and Scream.

She remained estranged from her parents however reconnected along with her dad in his later years. In 2003, she moved her father near her house as his health was deteriorating. She paid his scientific expenses till he died from most cancers at age 72 in 2004.
