Considering some of its reviews, it’s more than likely better that The Princess, recently streaming on Hulu, isn’t primarily based on a genuine princess. The new film is a royal mess, critics say.
Turns out, Joey King’s persona in the film, merely called The Princess, is encouraged via a fairytale persona, no longer a real-life determine. When twentieth Century Studios obtained the spec script for The Princess in October 2020, the project used to be billed as a cross between the Rapunzel fairy story and The Raid, the 2011 action thriller set in a high-rise tenement, in step with Deadline.
Joey King plays a “beautiful, strong-willed princess” with a plight similar to Rapunzel’s.
20th Century Studios’ synopsis of The Princess shows how the film puts an action-packed twist on the vintage Rapunzel tale: “When a stunning, strong-willed princess refuses to wed the cruel sociopath to whom she is betrothed, she is kidnapped and locked in a far off tower of her father’s fort. With her scorned, vindictive suitor intent on taking her father’s throne, the princess will have to offer protection to her circle of relatives and save the dominion.”
Joey, identified for her roles in the Kissing Both film sequence and the Hulu series The Act, takes on the title role.
Dominic Cooper (Preacher, Mamma Mia!) performs Moira, Julius, the princess’s merciless fiancé; Olga Kurylenko (Black Widow, Quantum of Solace) plays Julius’ sadistic consort; and Ed Stoppard (Brave New World, Dan Dare) plays the king, the princess’s father.
Le-Van Kiet (The Ancestral, The Requin) directed the film, off a script via screenwriters Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton.
In a fresh interview with Screen Rant, Ben and Jake defined that they had been inspired by means of the theory of Rapunzel as an action famous person. “Jake and I've at all times checked out tropes, and that’s sort of been our factor, is to look how are we able to take one thing that folks know and do it in a completely new means,” Ben told the web page. “I used to be like, ‘OK, here’s these types of princess movies. But what if one was once a badass?’”
Critics call the movie “yawningly simplistic” and “undercooked” with “precious little substance.”
The Princess does have its defenders — The New York Times’ Amy Nicholson compares it favorably to “feminist revenge thrillers of the Seventies,” for example — many critics have savaged the film. “A yawningly simplistic and roundly inconsequential action movie, The Princess lacks, on a narrative stage, the certitude and clarity of goal of its name personality,” Brent Simon writes for AV Club.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Lovia Gyarkye says films like The Princess “have a chokehold on a market determined to blindly capitalize on revolutionary values and concepts” and “effectively train younger folks that sexism ends when a lady — smarter but similarly violent to the boys around her — becomes king.”
CNN’s Brian Lowry, in the meantime, says “there’s valuable little substance to this violent delusion,” while IndieWire’s David Ehrlich says it’s “a straight-to-streaming cheapo so undercooked that it feels like an AMC psy-op designed to make you run to the nearest multiplex and beg for a ticket to no matter’s appearing subsequent.”
