Lillian had suffered with well being problems for a long time leading up to her loss of life, but reportedly she did not need her sickness to overshadow the work of her husband. “She’d kind of get on him about telling people she was ill," Lillian's friend, Xernona Clayton, told AJC in in 2013. "She didn’t need that to be the center of attention. She wanted him to do his paintings.”

At Lillian's funeral, Xernona spoke about how fiercely her buddy supported her husband.

“She immersed herself deeply into the entirety he wanted to do. She gave her talent, her power, her suggest and her fundraising ability to satisfy John’s wishes," Xernona stated, in line with WABE. "Lillian was a piece horse no longer a show horse.”
